Using Woodworking Hand Tools

Course Description
Hand tool woodworking is the traditional form of processing timber into lumber, preparing stock so that it is tried and true, and dimensioned to size. The marking and layout of joinery, making the joint, and finishing the work piece.
In this course students will learn how to use various woodworking tools.
Each module will begin with a lecture followed by a practical exercise. Hand-tool woodworking is an expansive topic with many variations due to cultural traditions from around the world. This course is intended as a guided crash course into hand-tool woodworking, mastery will come with time and practice. All students will be provided with reference materials for individual practice. If a student does not have all the tools listed below, they may still attend the class as a lecture and participate with the tools that they do have on hand.
Day 1 (4 Hours)
Introduction: 30 Minutes
Module 1: Understanding Wood as a Material (30 – 45 Minutes)
Module 2: Introduction to Sharpening (120 – 165 Minutes)
Module 2a: Planes, Chisels & Axes
Module 2b: Saws
Module 2c: Files & Rasps
Module 2d: Card Scraper
Day 2 (5.5 Hours)
Module 3: Introduction to Marking, Measuring, & Layout (60 – 90 Minutes)
Module 4: Introduction to Hewing with the Axe & Adze (60 Minutes)
Module 5: Introduction to Sawing (60 – 90 Minutes)
Module 6: Introduction to Planing (60 – 90 Minutes)
Day 3 (5.25 Hours)
Module 7: Introduction to Chiseling (60 – 90 Minutes
Module 8: Introduction to Boring (60 Minutes)
Module 9: Introduction to Files & Rasps (60 Minutes)
Module 10: Introduction to Finishing with Card Scrapers & Sanding (60 – 90 Minutes)
End of Course Survey: 10-15 Minutes
Tools & Materials Needed

It is ok if you don’t have all of the sizes and kinds of tools. Gather as many as you can to practice with. Then you can listen and watch for the rest, that way you are ready when you do get the tool/tools.

Saturday 26th and 27th: 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST w/ a lunch break from Noon to 1:00 p.m. EST (10:00 to 3:30 p.m. CST)
