Course Description

In this class, we’ll explore the block plane—not just as a tool, but as a gateway to precision, control, and craftsmanship. Whether you’re chamfering edges, fitting joints, or dialing in a perfect reveal, the block plane offers unmatched finesse in the palm of your hand.

What you’ll learn

– Bevel-up vs bevel-down blade orientation and why it matters;
– Understanding bed angle vs. cutting angle and how sharpening affects performance;
– Choosing the right block plane: key features, fit, and function;
– Common and advanced uses: trimming end grain, chamfering, round overs, fitting joinery, and more;
– Buying advice: what to look for, what to avoid, and whether you really need one; and
– Specialty techniques!

Who Should enroll:
Woodworkers and tool enthusiasts of all levels seeking to deepen their understanding of hand tool woodworking and improve their crafts with one of the most common tools found in the shop.

Tool/Material Need

Block Plane & Scrap Wood – Optional. I’ll walk through a few techniques, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you’re welcome to give them a go!
