About Our Woodworking Courses

Plane Wellness is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We offer free woodworking courses to individuals with a mental health diagnosis or physical disability, including veterans with a disability rating.

Our mission is to improve mental wellness through woodworking while encouraging an inclusive community.
Learn: We want you to learn woodworking and succeed in the craft.
Heal: We want you to heal from your traumas and experience peace.
Live: We want you to live life to the fullest and thrive in the community.

How we help people learn woodworking:

Our mission is simple, we provide free woodworking courses to individuals 18+ years old with a mental health diagnosis or physical disability, including disabled veterans.

Hobbies have been shown to improve mental wellness and if you know woodworking, you know that it is complex and not always easy to learn by just watching YouTube. Especially when someone has a diagnosis or disability. We want to break that barrier and help more individuals learn woodworking and thus improve their mental wellness.

Our plan for in person woodworking courses:

The next big step for Plane Wellness is to acquire land and build a facility where we can host students for woodworking retreats. We want to give them a chance to take a break from their normal day to day and spend time with others, woodworking, learning, and improving their mental wellness in a therapeutic, in-nature, environment. This will not only help them discover and enjoy woodworking but it will also help them “break the ice”  and meet friends with similar interests.

About our founder has a background in Mental Health and Woodworking

Picture of Jamie Harpster Plane Wellness Founder

Jamie Harpster has had a passion for improving the mental health of others since he was a child and dedicated his life to this mission. He received his Bachelors in Psychology from Cal State Monterey Bay in 2013 and his Masters in Human Services Counseling from Regent University in 2019. Jamie started working in the mental health field in 2014 and has been in the field ever since.

After purchasing his house in 2018, Jamie discovered woodworking because he needed a kitchen table. Since then he has learned that woodworking has greatly improved his own mental health symptoms and his basement shop soon became his retreat/safe space. He then developed a dream to one day combine his passion for mental health and woodworking; however, he never saw this as a possibility.

He started a YouTube channel in 2022 with the goal of helping others learn and enjoy the craft. The channel took off better than he ever expected and he was able to meet more like minded individuals. Through these interactions, Jamie met many people who shared their own experiences with mental health and how woodworking improved their mental wellness. This further solidified his dreams of combining mental wellness and woodworking to help others.

In 2023, he took the plunge and founded Plane Wellness to make this dream a reality.
