Course Description

The Gottshall Block is a simple block that was first created by Franklin Gottshall and popularized by Robert Lang. It is designed to teach layout methods and all the basic hand skills. 

This project will teach you how to make every cut needed to do any joint.
We will take each aspect and, one by one, cut them out. This usually takes 3-4 hours, depending on the class’s skill level. 

Tools/Materials Needed

Tools:
Marking knife
Square
Miter Square (or Speed Square)
Marking gauge(two if possible)
Joinery saw Japanese or Western (rip tooth and Crosscut if possible)
Chisel set
Mallet
Router plane (optional)
Dividers
Spokeshave (optional)
file and Rasp set (optional)
 
Materials:
one block of soft wood 3/4″ X 3″ X 7″ (poplar Is what we will use in person)
